Eyelid surgery advice Blepharoplasty

Upper eyelid surgery

Often sagging with age, the skin on the upper eyelid stretches and drops. This causes a fold to appear on the eyelid giving a droopy appearance. Patients who suffer from this can often find it difficult to apply make-up and, in extreme cases, it can affect peripheral vision. A blepharoplasty procedure involves making an incision on the upper eyelid and removing the excess skin, revealing more of the eye and resulting in a brighter, more youthful appearance.

Lower eyelid surgery

Bags under the eyes are common as we age. They are caused when the fatty tissue in the pockets under the eye increases and bulges forward. Combined with soft tissue loss and descent in the cheeks, the bags under the eyes can make a person appear older and more tired than they actually are. Lower eyelid surgery involves the removal, or repositioning of this fatty tissue again, to reduce the appearance of bags under the eyes.

Procedures designed to leave no visible scars

When making incisions during blepharoplasty, the surgeon will make his cuts in the existing natural folds of the eyelid. This helps to hide the scars so that they won’t be seen. This is especially true in the cases of transconjunctival blepharoplasty procedures, where the surgeon will remove the excess fatty tissue from the lower eyelids through an incision made on the inside of the lower eyelid, leaving no visible scar.

Surgery, recuperation and results

Eyelid surgery usually takes between 1-3 hours depending on the complexity of the case. Most patients do not need to stay in hospital overnight after their procedure and are allowed home the same day.

The eyelid surgery may cause some swelling and bruising, which will appear post-operatively, but this usually goes down in 1-2 weeks. The overall final effect of eyelid surgery will be apparent after several months. You will notice immediate results after the surgery, however as the eye heals and readjusts, this will keep improving. Effects of blepharoplasty are best appreciated by comparing before and after photos of the eye area.

Eyelid surgery results vary from patient to patient depending on the patient’s age, quality of the skin and condition of the tissue surrounding the eye. In order to determine your case, you can book a consultation with us and speak to one of our fully UK trained surgeons who will be more than happy to help give you realistic expectations of the procedure and which type you qualify for.

Eyelid surgery is a popular cosmetic procedure as its effects are not easily recognisable as the result of surgery. You can enjoy a brighter, more youthful appearance while keeping your friends and family guessing about just what your secret is.
