Gynaecomastia Surgery at Cosmetic Surgery Partners London

Gynaecomastia is the abnormal enlargement of male breast tissue – causing so-called  ‘Man boobs’ or ‘Moobs.’ It can affect up to 60 per cent of men, and most commonly strikes during puberty and once again at around the age of 60, when hormone levels change.

They can be caused by prescription or illegal drugs, some medical conditions and being overweight – as excess fat collects in the ‘moobs.’ Liposuction can help to suck some of the fat away, but it can often reappear. The best option could be gynaecomastia surgery or a combination of liposuction and gynaecomastia surgery.

The Surgery

Male chest reduction surgery is becoming increasingly common. Any type of breast surgery is a huge decision to make, especially as many men don’t like going to a doctor at all. But the first step is a discreet consultation with one of our cosmetic surgeons, who are incredibly experienced in this type of body surgery. They will assess the grade of gynaecomastia and advise you on the best surgical option – if they believe surgery is required. There are three grades of severity:

GRADE 1 – A small mass beneath the areola (the darker outer ring around your nipple) which causes protrusion and a ‘puffy’ nipple.

GRADE 2  -  Small breasts are present, but with no excess skin.

GRADE 3 – Involves an excess of breast tissue and skin.

At what age should I consider having male chest reduction surgery?

Due to the fact that the human body usually doesn’t mature till the late teens we as standard refuse to do any form of cosmetic surgery on patients under 18. However as long as the patient is in good health there is no real maximum age limit at which surgery is possible.

How can I prepare for surgery?

In order to best aid the healing process we advise all patients to quit smoking at least 2 weeks before the operation and thereafter. We always recommend a healthy and balanced diet. The patient must be in general good health which is something we will check during your initial consultation.

Is the surgery performed under local or general anaesthetic?

In some cases it is possible to perform the surgery under local anaesthetic however when a large amount of tissue needs to be surgically removed we will need to use a general anaesthetic in which case the patient will need to stay overnight at the hospital.

Will there be scars?

Each case will vary depending on the amount of tissue that needs to be removed during the surgery. Our surgeons are experts at creating minimal incisions and creating scars that are small in size and therefore hard to detect. Your surgeon will be able to advise you during your consultation.

Do I need to stay overnight at the hospital?

Usually we require gynaecomastia patients to stay the night at our hospital location. Your overnight stay will be discreet and personal, you will be allocated a private room to recover in and your assigned nurse will be on call throughout your stay to make sure you rest up in the best possible environment.
