Who will be present during your breast augmentation procedure

Information for anyone who is considering Breast Augmentation surgery

Undergoing any type of surgery, whether elective or non-elective is often a very worrying, anxious time for any person. It is a time where having support is crucial, and knowing exactly what will happen before, during and after your surgery often helps alleviate some of the worry.

Breast augmentation is the surgical procedure that enlarges the breasts to give you more fullness. To achieve this, a saline or silicone breast implant is placed into the breast, thus increasing the size of the breast. Breast augmentation surgery is the most common type of cosmetic procedure carried out on women in the UK.

In most cases, breast augmentation is performed under general anaesthetic, meaning you will be asleep during the procedure, thus unable to feel any discomfort or pain throughout. The process generally takes between one to two hours to complete, and if it is carried out as day surgery, you may be able to go home the same day. However, if the operation is scheduled for later in the day, then it is very likely you will be kept in overnight.

Prior to your surgery, your Surgeon will discuss with you the location of the incisions so you are well informed on where the scars will be once the procedure is complete. He or she will also discuss the potential risks and results of the procedure. In most cases you will have several consultations with your Surgeon prior to undergoing the breast augmentation procedure.

During the surgical procedure, there will be several people present in the theatre; a fully qualified and GMC registered Cosmetic Surgeon, an anaesthetist, and a team of NMC qualified nurses.

The anaesthetist will put you under the general anaesthetic prior to commencement of the surgery until you are in a deep sleep, enough so as not to feel any of the procedure as it takes place. The Surgeon will then proceed to make the incisions and insert the implants into the breasts. The nursing staff would be there to assist the Surgeon during the procedure, and would help you afterwards with your recovery, ensuring you are comfortable and providing you with pain relief.
