What is a blepharoplasty

For people seeking to give themselves a more youthful, vibrant appearance, the eyes are one of the first areas they will seek to improve. It is said that you can tell a lot from a person’s eyes, which unfortunately also includes age. As we get older, the skin around your eyes starts to lose some of its elasticity and wrinkles and bags can start to appear, making you look older.

This could be why blepharoplasty, or eyelid surgery, has slowly been increasing in popularity in the UK over recent years. In 2014, blepharoplasty was the second most popular cosmetic surgery procedure in the UK, with 7,752 people undergoing the procedure that year. But what exactly does a blepharoplasty entail, and what benefits can patients expect to see afterwards?

At Cosmetic Surgery Partners, our expert surgeons offer both upper eyelid surgery and lower eyelid surgery, to improve the appearance of the upper and lower eyelids. With upper eyelid surgery, or upper blepharoplasty, a surgeon will remove excess skin on the upper eyelid that has started to sag and droop, removing the upper lid crease and therefore revealing more of your eye. Revealing more of your eye will instantly give you a much more youthful and vibrant appearance.

Lower eyelid surgery, or lower blepharoplasty, focusses on the bags you can develop under your eyes, which are caused by far pockets in the lower eyelids. This procedure can address this issue by either removing or repositioning the fat, using either a trans-conjunctival or trans-cutaneous method. Regardless of whether the incision is made on the inside of the eyelid or just below the eyelid, it will heal very well and the scar will fade over time.

A blepharoplasty can sometimes be performed under local anaesthetic, however, a general anaesthetic is generally preferred by surgeons, for both accuracy and the patient’s comfort.
