Labiaplasty advice from expert Cosmetic Surgeons

The real reason women have labiaplasty surgery

Recently on the Mail Online, our expert surgeon Mr Miles Berry sets the record straight on Labiaplasty Surgery, often referred to as ‘Designer Vagina.’ The term ‘Designer Vagina’ is an umbrella term, used when describing female genital surgery. Implicating a procedure done purely for vanity, this is a concept that could not be further from the truth.

questions about cosmetic surgery

Most women opt for the labiaplasty procedure for functional reasons, or because they have been traumatised by having a misshapen/ low-hanging labia.

Labiaplasty is a surgical procedure reducing the labia minora – the flaps of skin either side of the vaginal opening. While some may find it hard to understand how women can be so insecure about an area rarely on show, Mr Miles Berry says how these feelings are very real and distressing for those experiencing them. Labia anxieties can prevent some women wearing bikinis or having relationships, while others suffer pain, tearing and are unable to pursue many sports.

In 2010 NHS figures show a rise five times higher than 2001. Since then, London based surgeons report to have seen an 80 per cent rise in the procedure between 2013 and 2014.

Cosmetic Surgeon Miles Berry speaks out about the real reasons behind Labiaplasty:

Labiaplasty expert surgeon, Miles Berry marks the increase of procedures down to the rise in awareness as well as the availability. Speaking to the Daily Mail he says:

“You might want to blame it on waxing, but just to blame it on pornography paints women in a bad light. Normally, women have looked at others in the changing room, or on the internet.

I perform the procedure on women whose labia is large enough, outside of the normal range. Also, if they have red and thickened tissue due to the rubbing on clothes such as jeans. The labia minora should be one cm long, and lower than the labia majora lower. The biggest I’ve seen is 5cm. Of course “normal” is a difficult concept and there is a cultural element here, because the Japanese consider long labia minora appealing”

Labiaplasty is not just a procedure to create a designer vagina, but a lifeline for those distressed and insecure.
