Do Demographics Affect Satisfaction with Rhinoplasty Surgery?

Rhinoplasty, otherwise known as a nose job, is one of the most popular procedures when it comes to cosmetic surgery. Many people see cosmetic surgery as an obvious solution when they aren’t particularly happy with their appearance, either undergoing major alterations or just subtle tweaks to get to the result they desire.

Patients seek cosmetic surgery procedures for a variety of reason reasons, and rhinoplasty can be performed for aesthetic reasons as well as medical. By changing just one feature you can completely transform your face, and although figures are down 20% from the year before in terms of how many rhinoplasty procedures were carried out in the UK, it is still a very popular procedure.

Rhinoplasty can increase or decrease the size of your nose and change the tip, the bridge or even the nostrils. Undergoing this type of surgery can be a procedure that helps your self-consciousness and has a recovery time of around 3-6 weeks.

Global Rhinoplasty surgery trends

Across the globe there are different standards and expectations, meaning different trends can occur when it comes to cosmetic surgery. In 2014, Tehran in Iran was dubbed the nose job capital, with the highest number of rhinoplasty procedures per capita globally.

On top of this, rhinoplasty was the 6th most popular cosmetic procedure in the UK in 2014. Certain countries seemed to top the list when it comes to cosmetic surgery figures, with rhinoplasty being formed 102,597 times in South Korea, 83,025 times in Brazil and 54,873 times in the US.

The Rhinoplasty statistics; Men vs Women

There does appear to be a particular trend between men and women when it comes to rhinoplasty surgery. According to data from the British Association of Aesthetic Plastic Surgeons, men and women differ in their choices, with men tending to opt for nose jobs more than women.

For the most part, facial features of men and women are very different; men typically have a more square face with a well-defined jawline, and often noses can be more prominent on men when compared to a woman’s face. Statistics released by the American Society for Aesthetic Plastic Surgery hinted that there had been a rise in male plastic surgery procedures, with male procedures having risen 43% in the last 5 years.

A few reasons that were speculated as to the reason for the rise in rhinoplasty among men included the notion that it would make the patient look more youthful and facial features more natural.

Research Into Patient Satisfaction

Research undertaken at the Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Centre, New York and Georgetown University Hospital in Washington saw 59 patients undergo rhinoplasty surgery to try and find demographic predictors of differences in satisfaction with appearance and quality of life.

The researchers used a variety FACE-Q scales, including Satisfaction with Facial Appearance, Satisfaction with Nose, Social Function and

Psychological Well-being.

The results found that women actually demonstrated significantly improvements in satisfaction with facial appearance and quality of life, while men experienced improvement only with satisfaction with facial appearance.

Caucasians saw improvements in their facial appearance while non-Caucasians did not, and when it came to age demographics, the researchers found that patients under 35 were more likely to experience higher satisfaction than those over 35.

Every face and every nose is different, with each person undergoing a different transformation depending on their desired look. With the figures for rhinoplasty surgery around the world still high, it is clear that people are continuing to enjoy the results of their cosmetic surgery and will probably continue for years to come.
